Indigenous Tourism British Columbia (ITBC) has been allocated $400,000 by Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) to deliver Round 2 of the COVID-19 Emergency Relief Funds Program for Market Ready Indigenous Tourism Businesses to address immediate and short-term needs.
The program will provide emergency support to help pay the fixed costs of Indigenous businesses that have been financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the disruption of the 2020 tourism season. Eligible fixed costs for this program include, but are not limited to, the rent and/or mortgage payable on business premises; hydro, gas and other utilities; wages that are not covered by other programs, personal protective equipment; and, insurance premiums. Costs that are not eligible include the purchase of supplies, or discretionary business spending, such as advertising expenses.
Although Indigenous Tourism BC understands that every tourism business has been impacted, the program will target small entrepreneurial-owned market ready businesses who make up more than half of the Indigenous tourism businesses in BC. Indigenous Tourism BC will continue to advocate on behalf of the entire Indigenous tourism industry, especially the community-owned businesses who will require larger funds to recover. All indigenous tourism businesses are eligible to receive business guidance on other government relief programs from Indigenous Tourism BC and the Indigenous Tourism Specialists in the regions.
This fund is to assist Market-Ready Indigenous tourism businesses in BC who are experiencing business disruption and financial loss due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. It is meant to support market-ready Indigenous tourism business and provide short-term support to bridge business towards a longer-term recovery plan and will be accessing government relief programs.
Applicants will be required to share business and financial information related to the impact of COVID-19 on their business. Indigenous Tourism BC will provide guidance for accessing government relief funds.
Eligible recipients are registered Indigenous Tourism BC Stakeholders who are Indigenous tourism businesses (51% owned or more indigenous-owned) offering market-ready Indigenous tourism products and experiences in BC.
Due to COVID-19, Indigenous Tourism BC has waived all Stakeholder fees.
