June 21 was declared a national holiday in 1996, the date was chosen to coincide with the summer solstice and the beginning of a season of berry picking and fishing, powwows, and gatherings for Indigenous peoples in Canada. As Indigenous people, our celebration of all things Indigenous is never-ending. This June and every month, we honour Indigenous children, their families, and their communities.
Hon. Melanie Mark, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, and Sport in BC, has a simple call to action for National Indigenous Peoples Day 2021–support Indigenous businesses and self-determination by travelling, eating, and shopping.
Sounds easy, right? Have fun, take pictures, and hashtag #IndigenousBC to stand behind the success of Indigenous peoples, families, and communities.
