In celebration of Truth and Reconciliation Day, the Secwépemc Landmarks Project stands as a testament to the resilience and enduring presence of the Secwépemc People in their traditional territory.
This initiative promotes the learning of Secwepemctsín (Secwépemc language) and raises awareness of Secwépemc oral histories through digital media, including audio and QR codes. The project offers an immersive experience that educates visitors and locals alike by connecting community voices to significant locations, centring Secwépemc voices, narratives, and place names. The landmarks’ accessibility on universal trails ensures broad engagement.
“The Secwépemc communities, Elders, and youth have embraced this project and have come on board to help shape it. The feedback from the communities has been unanimously positive and many have stated that it’s been a long time coming and something that is needed, especially the off-reserve sculptures.” — Shelley Witzky-Spemulecw (early-riser), Cstélnec (Adams Lake Indian Band), Secwépemc Nation, Secwépemc Landmarks Project Manager.
The public is encouraged to visit, share experiences, and advocate for more landmarks, furthering understanding and appreciation of Secwépemc culture in alignment with Truth and Reconciliation principles.
