Through Destination Development work, ITBC helps cultivate places that honour and sustain the land, culture, and communities rather than treat them as commodities. ITBC’s efforts here are rooted in First Nations and Indigenous values, emphasizing stewardship, reciprocity, and respect for the environment and people. This approach co-creates authentic experiences that connect visitors to the deeper stories of the land while ensuring tourism benefits local First Nations and Indigenous communities, protects ecosystems, and preserves cultural heritage.

Our Efforts 
ITBC plays a key role by providing First Nations and Indigenous communities, tourism businesses and entrepreneurs with the tools, training, and partnerships needed to develop and enhance tourism destinations. This fosters economic growth, cultural revitalization, and environmental stewardship, helping communities share their heritage while creating jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities. ITBC’s capacity-building efforts enable communities to improve infrastructure, develop eco-tourism, and ensure tourism experiences remain authentic and sustainable. On-the-ground impacts include public facilities, interpretive signage, trail systems, and visitor centres supporting community-led tourism businesses.

Through these initiatives, ITBC advances Reconciliation by promoting understanding and respect for Indigenous histories while driving economic and social progress.
