Culture

With guided tours to Hot Springs Cove, whale watching, and bear viewing, visitors can explore Ahousaht territories while learning about their hosts’ Indigenous culture, language, history, and storytelling.

Guests to Ahousaht haḥuułii are deeply engaged in Ahousaht knowledge, fostering a deep connection with the land, waters, and the spirit of the ecosystem. Ahous Adventures’ approach to tourism encourages guests to honour the sacredness of the territories and embrace a guest-host relationship rooted in traditional Ahousaht values of respect and reciprocity.

Your cultural learning with Ahousaht guides will take you through the heart of Ahousaht haḥuułii. Observe black bears in their natural habitat as you boat through the waters of Clayoquot Sound. Join an experienced and knowledgeable crew and explore the Pacific Ocean waters to find gray whales, humpback whales and occasional transient orcas.

Witness the magic of the ocean as you cruise the coast and inlets, taking in all of the sights and wildlife on your way to Host Springs Cove. The 30-minute walking trail to the hot springs is an intermediate-level hike with several elevation changes throughout the 2km distance via a wooden boardwalk that weaves its way through old-growth rainforest in Clayoquot Sound, home to the Nuu-chah-nulth Nations for thousands of years.

Community

Ahous Adventures is dedicated to creating meaningful employment opportunities, fostering skill development, and promoting sustainable economic growth within the Ahousaht community.

The business, owned and managed by Ahousaht hereditary chiefs through the Maaqutusiis Hahoutlhee Stewardship Society, actively works towards this goal by investing in tourism as a means of generating economic development that benefits Ahousaht community members of all ages, as well as their haḥuułii–their territorial lands, waters and culture. This initiative aims to provide employment opportunities, foster skill development, and empower local community members while contributing to a sustainable conservation economy and the wider community.

Job fairs within the Ahousaht First Nation territory and in local schools to actively recruit and engage with young community members. Infrastructure purchases, such as boat fleets and mechanic shops, not only support the local economy but also create opportunities for sustainable entrepreneurship within the Ahousaht community.

Ahousaht Adventures partners with local kayaking companies in Tofino, which charge a stewardship fee for the Maaqutusiis Hahoutlhee Stewardship Society, demonstrating their commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship. Funds from these community partnerships are used for projects such as rejuvenating salmon-bearing rivers, benefitting the local ecosystem and contributing to the cultural and economic well-being of the Ahousaht people.

Ahous Adventures aims to contribute to the economic well-being of young community members while fostering a sense of pride and ownership in their cultural heritage. Through one-on-one mentorship relationships, youth are supported in their personal and professional growth, paving the way for future leadership through intergenerational knowledge transfer.

Sustainability

Ahous Adventures practices waste reduction, energy conservation, and responsible resource management. With recycling programs, energy-efficient equipment, and water conservation measures, the eco- and cultural tour company offers low-impact tourism activities that minimize disruption to natural ecosystems and wildlife habitats.

The business has a minimal environmental footprint and focuses on responsible wildlife viewing and eco-friendly transportation options, including walking and kayaking.

Ahous’ tour guides are cultural and environmental ambassadors who integrate ecological education and awareness into guest experiences and provide opportunities for visitors to learn about local ecosystems, conservation efforts, and sustainable living practices.

Operating in tandem with Wahous Wilderness Lodge, the two businesses connect visitors to Ahousaht-led tour offerings and destinations in the haḥuułii, including Lone Cone Mountain, the Wildside Trail, Nismaquin Park (Maquinna Marine Park), culture and healing programs, and more.

Ahous Adventures invites visitors to explore ʕaḥuusʔatḥ territories through the lens of the people who have lived on and stewarded these lands and waters since time immemorial. By openly sharing ʕaḥuusʔatḥ knowledge, culture and history through storytelling on the lands and waters, locals and visitors can connect deeply with the true spirit of the remarkable ecosystem.
